week 5This Wednesday we went back to Canine Castaways. It was pretty cold and windy outside, but Shelly asked us to walk a few of the dogs. We walked Junior, Lily, and Roxanne. Roxanne is a new dog at the shelter, and she is such a cutie. It was also pretty muddy outside and in the dogs kennels, so Cara, Jocelynn, and I got a little bit muddy, but we were glad to get the dogs out on a walk! week 6We have been on spring break for a couple weeks, but we are now back. Jocelynn, Cara, and I have decided that we are no longer volunteering for Canine Castaways. We are now focusing on our project at Woodland Terrace for the rest of the year! We will go meet with our seniors every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Shelly and I are still working on the "My Journey My Life" book.

Week 1This week our volunteering finally kickstarted! On the long class period Wednesday, we went to Canine Castaways to get a tour of everything and the animals and dogs that are there. Right now there are 6 dogs currently living at the rescue that need homes, but there are many others at foster families that also need adopted! Shelly, the owner of Canine Castaways, also has a few cats, two horses, and two domesticated wolves. She definitely has her hands full with all the animals she is taking care of! Jocelynn, Cara, and I are mainly focusing on doing volunteer work and fundraisers for the dogs that are still needing homes. While we were there, we took 4 of the dogs out of their kennels and took them on walks. I was so glad we were able to help get the dogs out and about rather than staying in a kennel all day. Next week, we plan on deciding what fundraiser we want to begin first for Canine Castaways, so we can get it started! We are also getting in contact with Shelly to see if she needs our help next Wednesday with whatever she needs! week 2This long class period we built dog beds that someone donated to Canine Castaways. We didn't have much time there this class, but we were able to make 2 dog beds for Shelly! Jocelynn and I built the dog beds while Cara took a dog, Heavenly, for a walk and took some cute pictures of her so she can get adopted! week 3This week we continued our volunteering at the rescue center on our long period Wednesday. We met new puppies that the rescue received, so we were able to take them outside and play with them! We also walked a handful of dogs for Shelly. They were named Soulja Boy, Dolly, Coca-Cola, and there were two Bella's (haha). week 4The long class period Wednesday, we were planning on volunteering at Canine Castaways. But Shelly wasn't going to be there, so Cara, Jocelynn, and I reached out to Caralee to go meet with our seniors. The senior I was paired up with is Sally. She is 85 years old and she was born in 1939. She is so sweet and nice and has so many stories to share with me! We were able to fill out a good amount of questions in the book, but we were mainly just getting to know each other and enjoy each other's company. I really enjoyed talking with Sally and I can't wait to hear more of her life lessons and stories. We will be going back Monday and I am looking forward to it!
Canine Castaways is a local, non-profit animal shelter located in Fountaintown. They rescue many dogs that are in kill shelters. These dogs are put into kill shelters due to the overcrowding of city shelters, so Canine Castaways rescues them to be able to give them a second chance. We want to help the dogs find new homes, have a better life, and help the people at Canine Castaways by doing what we can to make their job easier so they can continue to rescue dogs. Our plan is to volunteer at Canine Castaways every Wednesday and walk the dogs, play with them, and do whatever they need help with. We are also wanting to hold a fundraiser night for them at either McDonald's, Dairy Queen, or Mozzi's Pizza and donate the proceeds to Canine Castaways. We could also hold a donation drive for them at our school to get supplies they need. We are going to be meeting with the owner of Canine Castaways soon to see what kind of fundraiser they would like and hear any ideas they might have. We are so excited to help out the dogs and people at Canine Castaways for our next project! |
